I am always trying to get my kids involved around the house. However, a designated weekly chore chart has never been our top priority. If there is something needing to be done, they help. If i ask them to do something they do it. But, with this plan of action my kids do not learn the lesson of working and earning money. To then, hopefully save it. When myself and a few blogging friends wanted to upcycle the same ceramic planter I knew just what I was going to do with it. Turn it into a household job listing board.
This project came about because I got together with a group of bloggers for a create and share challenge. We all purchased the same ceramic planter and found different ways to use it. The link takes you to all of the other creative projects. Here is what I came up with.
This is the ceramic board we all started with, a blank canvas to do with as we pleased.
I used painters tape and got out my trusty and deeply loved turquoise spray paint. I always have a few of these laying around. I used the painters tape to add some stripes, a nice visual and contrast for the planter.
I cut a piece of wood down to my desired size and then stained the wood a dark walnut. The long winded tutorial of staining the wood is in my blog.
Using more painters tape, I created a square on the stained wood. Then using chalkboard paint, and doing two coats.
This nameplate I had from a box that I have in my cupboard, I have never used the nameplate so I unscrewed it from the box. Spray painted it the same blue as the planter and screwed it into the board.
I put a hook in the center of the board and hung the planter from the hole already in the planter. Put the money in to entice my kids.
Listed the jobs needed. Keep in mind my kids are 7, 5, and 4. SO the jobs they are capable of need to be basic and simple. They do enjoy checking the chart to see if money and jobs are listed. I have also listed jobs and written rewards, a extra 15 minutes of tablet time, a trip to have ice cream after dinner. It does not need to be solely monetary to reward the kids for helping around the house.
I added this chore board to a gallery wall that is in a room off of our kitchen. It is called the study and has my kids art area as well as their books. It is centrally located so I can keep my eye on the money and they can see if a job is posted. This was such a simple and quick project. It added function, life lessons for my kids, and some fun color and detail to the gallery wall. The full tutorial and lots more pictures are on my blog.
