How To DIY A Barn Wood Finish

After completing a little makeover in my half bath, I had to do something about the builder grade vanity. Changing it out wasn't an option, so I found a way to DIY the finish I was after.

The cabinets started out looking like this, typical builder grade everything.

The first thing I did was paint them white. That is when I decided I wanted something darker to match the rustic mirror we had hung. So I sanded off half of the white paint.

At this point, I stained right over the sanded cabinets. I used Minwax stain in dark walnut. Because I had never tried this before, I practiced on the inside of the doors before starting on the outside.

After the stain was fully dry (a couple of days later) I went back over the cabinets with a sanding sponge to further distress them.

The more white paint you leave on the cabients, the lighter the end look will be!
