Room Design: How I Turned an Old Maple Hutch Into a Garden Beauty

I purchased this old damaged maple hutch a few years ago and put her in storage. I knew how I would bring her back to life, but she had to have a new purpose.

My first step was to remove the bottom doors that would no longer stay shut and were cracked. I used regular black spray paint on the inside of the cabinet.

I started with the hutch top and used a custom mix of Annie Sloan chalk paint as my base. I love the vintage green look. I then went over some of the areas with Primer Red. These areas would show through when I started to distress it.

I then got a bowl of water and my can of Old White and dipping my brush ever so lightly into the water, then the paint, I started to white wash and smash the paint over the top of the whole piece. Next came the sanding.

Using a sanding block, I sanded the edges and the rail of the hutch. I then added old platters and some bird houses. I also added my dad's old meat grinders. In the drawers I store yard tools and such. I didn't seal it although you could cover it with a clear coat of shellac. I'll let it weather on it's own. I just love it!
