For whatever reason, builders in my area love popcorn ceilings...and I hate them!! So when I moved into my house, I was determined to get rid of as much of the popcorn as possible. The problem is that the guys who installed the drywall knew popcorn was going over top, so they did a horrible job of taping and mudding (which you really only find out after you have scraped the popcorn off). Plan B? Find ways to disguise the popcorn...Installing faux tin ceiling tiles was a simple and easy-to-install solution.I used styrofoam ceiling tiles which come in a lot of different patterns, can be painted whatever color you want, are really easy to cut and are installed with glue...just about the easiest installation you can find.
We painted them with silver glaze to get the tin look. It's easiest to paint them before you install them. And do not use spray paint (I learned the hard way). It "eats" the styrofoam and you end up with pits in the finish.
Here's what I started with. A very plain, white, covered-in-popcorn ceiling.
The styrofoam ceiling tiles install right over popcorn ceilings with no problem at all using glue...I used Liquid Nails.
When the tiles need to be cut, just measure the space, cut the tile with a utility knife and glue up. No tin snips (or sharp edges to worry about).
Here's the finished ceiling in my kitchen. From the ground, you cannot tell that it is styrofoam. The whole thing was done in an evening.
My mother liked it so much, she did the same thing in her bathroom!
