See How Paint Transformed This Eyesore Floor

What do you do if your floor is too damaged to refinish inexpensively? Paint it!
When Lara Edge ripped out her ugly beige carpet hoping to refinish the wood floors underneath, what she found wasn't pretty. The floors were in bad shape with deep gouges and holes. This hole (below) was about 2 inches wide and 6 inches long.

Restoring and refinishing the floor to its original state was beyond Edge's DIY skills. Her contractor said it would cost more than $20,000 to refinish because the floors were in such bad shape - not an option on her modest $150K home.
What did she do?
First, she sanded the floor to get a smoother finish.





Then she repaired the hole in the floor using this goop.





It took a couple of days of filling, drying, and sanding.





Once the floor was dry and completely sanded, she painted it. At first, she thought she'd go with a brown shade to keep the look of wood. But when she realized that would only make it look like a cheap imitation, she opted for a vibrant color.
Paint costs a whole lot less than refinishing and can cover up a host of flaws. Plus, it offers up a whole world of color that can completely transform a room.

She used porch paint for the floor -- Sherwin Williams' "Peppery." By the way, the wall paint is called "Pickle" and the ceiling paint is "Marshmallow." Nice theme, huh?





Cost of paint and sealant: around $500 for the entire house. Much better than $20K!
