This Stanley faux bamboo dresser is a great vintage piece. I bought it in this condition, knowing I could redo it. I've been refinishing vintage pieces for over 4 years now and didn't think removing this black paint would be any big deal. Boy was I mistaken! This piece was for a customer who wanted it painted in a glossy robins egg blue w/teal inner drawers. I did the entire piece by hand because of all the detailing work a sprayer would have missed.The first step was stripping off this paint. I though I could just get away with a good sanding, primer and new paint. Uh, no. I use Soy Gel stripper. Non toxic and cleans up with water.
The problem with this stripping job is all the grooves and detailing on these drawer fronts. Plus, the drawer fronts are not wood. It's some kind of resin material. Oy. What an absolute nightmare. If you go to my blog post, you can see the whole shebang. The top and sides and drawer sides were made from mahogany. That part was no big deal. It was smooth and straight forward to paint.
And these waffle things on the middle drawers,,,,omg,,,,This was stripping hell. I really don't know what else to call it.
Don't even get me started on the hardware. That was another 3 hour job to polish those! But in the end, it was worth it. Over 20-25 hours of work....Behold.
I used Ben Moore Advance in Glossy. I love this paint!
The customer chose to leave the hardware natural. I did scrub off 50 years of gunk and grime. they will tarnish quickly.
