Tool Chest Kitchen Island

I bought these tool chest from a neighbor's estate sale in 2007 right before we began my kitchen renovation, but they didn't fit through the door to my workshop! We kept all my kitchen needs in them while renovating and it became a permanent fixture with the huge Gladiator work table on top. But that workshop table is just too big and I needed it in my shop. I was just going to order the double maple top that connects two tool chests so it was not so bulky...

Then, I realized this 1800's drafting table top would be a good fit and provide a spot for sitting too.





I simply laid the drafting table on the chests and attached two mis-matched legs. The right one, a fireplace column I picked from the trash in Boston years ago has three siblings, but I wanted the workstation to go with the theme of my kitchen which was all about reclamation and fun. So, for the other leg I used a factory form which came from the same factory as others I have in the kitchen.
We just fit the legs underneath the table top and marked them, then cut them and screwed them in! If you have kids you would probably want to secure it more than I worry about. I used lemon oil on the desk top and I oil it now and then...





This is a shot of the cafe nook in the kitchen just showing the factory form over the garden window from the same factory as the one used as a leg. And the matching cabinet for all my baking pans and crock pots etc to be out of sight.





Gladiator storage cabinets made for tools.... perfect for kitchen tools! Great storage drawer for cutlery.





The second drawer is just right for all your cooking gadgets. I have always been partial to orange Tupperware.





And then it is as if the third drawer was indeed made for food wraps!
