After a DIY Kitchen makeover just under two years ago, we had updated everything from painting the cabinets, new back-splash, sink, hardware, and DIY counters. Lets face it kitchen makeovers can be quite pricey, but ours cost us less than $400. We wanted to make smart choices for our kitchen without breaking the bank. One of the products I had seen multiple tutorials on was the Ardex Feather Finish Concrete mix.Ardex Feather finish can be applied to just about any "roughed up" surface and really create a rustic or modern feel to a kitchen. I love concrete counters, but the cost and the labor to pour concrete just did not seem like a good option for us. Once we came across this product it all made sense and we went straight to work scuffing up our laminate counters and applying on the concrete as directions displayed.
Well, sometimes us DIYers get things all wrong. We are not all perfect! Especially me...I am good for making mistakes and finding ways to correct them. The original blog post I had read about Ardex the tutorial had an extra step in staining them. Well...I misread the directions and painted the counters instead. After realizing my mistake it was too late and we ended up sealing the counters and just letting them go for almost 2 years. The counters ended up pealing away and we were left with a not so great looking countertop. I decided to purchase another bag of Ardex and we gave the counters another try. We scuffed and sanded them real good and applied one new layer on top. Perfect! It took us only about an hour in total to apply and then I added 3 new coats of wet look sealer and our counters looked better than ever.
And the before!
So glad we decided to re-do the counters they came out so much better this time and have more of an authentic concrete look since there is no paint hiding them anymore.
