It's that time of year when zinnia blooms begin to die off as new ones arrive. Many gardeners cut off dead blooms and toss the remains into compost or the burn pile. I was taught to save the best dried blooms and harvest their seeds for the next spring planting.

Leave your best blooms on the plant to bloom past their prime. The center will begin to expand until it dries out.

Sometimes you can harvest while the petals are still on. It makes sorting a little messy so using a screen is helpful to remove the seeds from the dried petals.
