I found this old vintage apothecary like cabinet at a local antique junk shop here in town. It was mauve pink, chipped, dinged, and dented. Some of the hardware was missing, and the stuff that was still there was mismatched and in rough shape. It needed a lot of work, to say the least.
But I've wanted a cabinet like this for a long time, and the work is half the fun! So I took her home with me, and gave her the chance she needed!
After cleaning her up, and removing all the old hardware, the awful pink paint needed to go! Stripping paint is really much easier than you think!
Some of the cabinet was in too rough a shape to leave unpainted. I wanted to stain it, originally, but sometimes the damage is too great. Paint hides those flaws well. There were stickers on some of the reclaimed wood used to build this piece dating back into the 1920s.
The drawers were in great shape once the pink paint had been cleaned off,so they got a nice fresh coat of stain.
A 2 day soak in vinegar cleaned some of the rust off the old lock mechanism which moves freely again.
We added some new, matching hardware to the drawers, and front of the cabinet
And then we broke down this old coffee table to use it's legs on the cabinet! This was my favorite part, I think.
you'd never know this was the same old, legless, mauve pink cabinet with it's mismatched hardware, dents and dings. I love how it turned out!
